Relocation Companies Advice For Your First Big Move

Whether you have been offered a fantastic career opportunity or just fancy a fresh start in a new city, your first big move is a big deal. While you may think it is just a matter of calling a couple of relocation companies, there are some fundamentals to make your move go a little smoother.

Get Your Family Prepared:

While your employer may be organizing relocation services, this doesn’t mean that you will have nothing to do. Your parents may have waved you off to college, but they may not be quite ready for you to start your career on the other side of the country. So, you need to take a little time to get your family prepared for your first big move and give them an opportunity to ask any questions they may have. You have lived with your parents for most, if not all of your life, so you will need to reassure them that you will come back for visits and you would welcome guests into your new home.

Research Your New Home:

Although you may be aware of how fantastic your new employer is, do you know anything about the town or city you will be calling home? Before you relocate, it is a good idea to take a little time to research your new home. Check out what facilities are available and what kind of weather you can expect. You will also need to consider whether you will need a car when you arrive or if it is more feasible to walk. If you do need a car, will you purchase one when you arrive or do you need to ship your current car?

Discover the Services Offered by Relocation Companies:

If your new employer has arranged for commercial movers or a relocation services provider, you need to be aware of what is and is not included in the package. Will you have professional packers or will you need to self pack? Can you transport your pets? Will your belongings be express shipped? All of these issues will affect how you prepare yourself for the move. Even if your employer has organized a full relocation service, you will still need to assess what you do and do not need to move. This is an ideal opportunity to do a little life laundry and clear some of your clutter. While you may think your parents will keep your room as a shrine to you, they may have other plans for your old room, so you may need to decide if items can be donated or sold. Remember, that it is always a good idea to have essentials with you, just in case the rest of your belongings are delayed. You won’t want to show up to your new job in jeans, simply because all of your smart clothes are still in transit. You should also keep all of your important paperwork such as your birth certificate, medications and any sentimental items with you.
